Carin Lisa Johansson-Pape (1907-1989) shaped Finnish lighting design over a career spanning five decades. Born in Helsinki on 21 January 1907, she studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, graduating in 1928 with a focus on furniture design. Her early work centered on furniture for the manufacturer Kylmäkoski, and from 1937 she designed for Stockmann. A shift during the Second World War redirected her career toward lighting, a transition she later described with characteristic understatement: "By education, I am a furniture designer, but I had to make lamps during the war."

From 1942 onward, Johansson-Pape worked with Orno, Stockmann's lighting subsidiary, where she developed a design language that balanced warm, diffused light with clean geometric forms. Her pendant lamps became defining objects of Finnish modernism. The Sipuli (1954), an opaline glass pendant shaped like an onion bulb, won a gold medal at the Milan Triennale in 1954. The Laura pendant (1957) earned her the Pro Finlandia medal, one of Finland's highest cultural honors. Other well-known models include the Lisa pendant (1947) and the Ihanne table lamp series in brass and leather.

Johansson-Pape's approach to lighting was rooted in practical problem-solving. She designed for specific environments and paid close attention to how light fell on surfaces. Her fixtures often used layered shades or perforated metal to control glare while allowing generous illumination. Materials ranged from opaline glass and acrylic to brass, painted metal, and hand-stitched leather.

Beyond lighting, she maintained a parallel career in textiles. She joined the Friends of Finnish Handicraft in 1933 and served as its Artistic Director from 1951 to 1985. Her work appeared at the 1939 New York World's Fair and traveled through the United States and Canada as part of the "Design in Scandinavia" exhibition in the 1950s.
