Born on 23 July 1952 in Trondheim, Kjell Erik Killi Olsen trained across three countries before settling into a practice that has consistently defied easy categorisation. He studied at Kunstskolen i Trondheim, the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, Poland, and the Norwegian National Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo between 1972 and 1981 - a formation that gave him both technical rigour and exposure to very different artistic traditions.

Wikipedia

From the beginning, Killi Olsen's imagery has occupied a zone between carnival and nightmare. His paintings and sculptures conjure humanoid figures that are at once grotesque, erotic, and darkly comic - drawn from mythology, folklore, and his own invented bestiary. The work does not simply aim to disturb; it circles around questions of desire, power, and transformation with a visual wit that keeps the viewer in productive discomfort.

International recognition came swiftly. In 1986 he held a solo exhibition at Galleria Salvatore Ala in Milan and participated in the Venice Biennale the same year. Three years later, his large installation 'Salamandernatten' represented Norway at the São Paulo Biennale, where it was seen by over 600,000 visitors. The work consisted of 78 fiberglass and papier-maché figures centred on a woman breastfeeding a salamander - a symbol of regenerated evil in Brazilian culture - and it remains one of the most discussed Norwegian works shown abroad during that decade.

His public presence in Norway is equally significant. In 1994 he created 'Mannen fra Havet' (The Man from the Sea), a 430 cm cast-iron and crystal sculpture erected in Bø in Vesterålen as part of the Artscape Nordland project. Major survey exhibitions followed: 'Begynnelsen' toured Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, Trondheim Kunstmuseum, and Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum between 2005 and 2007, while 'Den lange reisen' was shown at Galleri Brandstrup in 2017 and 'Killi-Olsen: skulpturer' opened at Dronning Sonjas Kunsthall in 2018. His prints are represented in the Queen Sonja Print Award collection, with works from 2023 including drypoint etching and photopolymer pieces. He is held in the collections of the National Museum in Oslo and the Museu de Arte Moderna de Campinas in Brazil.

On the Scandinavian auction market, Killi Olsen's work appears primarily through Grev Wedels Plass Auksjoner and Metropol, with 12 lots recorded in the Auctionist database. Paintings have led the results, with the work 'The Village without Harbour' (1998-1999) reaching NOK 155,000, followed by a related canvas at NOK 100,000 and 'The Loving Hedge' at NOK 95,000. The price range reflects a stable collector base for his paintings at the upper end and consistent demand across formats.
