Kia Bergquist is a Swedish sculptor and painter based in Nässjö, Småland, where she maintains a studio at Pinnen - a converted factory building on Fabriksgatan. Her practice centres on what she calls nätskulptur, a form of three-dimensional sculpture built entirely from metal mesh that she shapes by hand, without templates or molds. The result is a body of work that is simultaneously light and structural, capturing posture and movement in wire rather than mass.
Her sculptures fall into two main formats. Some are freestanding pieces mounted on painted wooden or stone bases, occasionally fitted with small LED lights to throw dramatic shadow patterns onto surrounding walls. Others are mounted flat onto linen or canvas, producing objects that sit at the edge between sculpture and painting - what she calls nätskulpturtavlor. The titles of her works signal her interest in psychological states and transient moments: 'Waiting for the Morning to Come', 'Moving On', 'Moonlight Daydream', 'Only Between You and Me'.
Bergquist is a member of Svenska Konstnärsförbundet (the Swedish Artists' Association) and participates in regional art rounds including Höglandets Konstrunda and Södra Vätterbygdens Konstrunda. She has exhibited regularly since at least 2014, with group and solo presentations at venues across Småland and southern Sweden, including shows at Tofta Konstgalleri in Varberg and Konsthelg på Pinnen in Nässjö. In parallel with her sculptural work she also paints in acrylic, producing fantasy landscapes populated by invented creatures and plants.
