Karin Borgström, born Josefina Kristina Schöld on 27 May 1903 in Hörby in Skane, spent her life close to the landscape and small communities of southern Sweden. She trained at Skånska målarskolan in Malmö, a school that shaped a generation of Scanian painters working in the realist and post-impressionist tradition, and complemented this with study trips to the Netherlands and Germany, where she encountered Dutch and German still-life and genre painting traditions at first hand.
Her subject matter settled into a consistent range: flower still lifes with vigorous, informal brushwork; winter and forest landscapes, often nocturnal or muted in tone; figure subjects; and occasional genre pieces including at least one clown painting that appears in the auction record. She settled in Tjörnarp in Skane and lived there until her death on 19 January 1987.
