Kai Kristiansen's Model 42 dining chair, designed in 1956, earns its nickname the "Z-chair" from the sharp angles of its frame, a piece of visual geometry that masks an intensely comfortable seat. The chair's back support lifts away from the seat frame at an angle that looks precarious but feels perfectly natural, a hallmark of the Danish modern approach that Kristiansen absorbed during his training.

Born in 1929, Kristiansen started as a cabinetmaker before studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen under Kaare Klint, the architect who founded the furniture design school and instilled in his students a respect for proportion, materials, and functional clarity. Kristiansen opened his own design studio in the mid-1950s and quickly became one of the most productive furniture designers of the Danish modern era. His preferred materials were teak and rosewood, and he worked with leading Danish manufacturers including Magnus Olesen, Fritz Hansen, and Vildbjerg Mobelfabrik.

His output ranged from dining chairs and desks to sideboards and cabinets, all characterised by geometric precision and a warmth that came from his choice of woods and his attention to surface finish. The kidney-shaped rosewood desk is among his most distinctive pieces, its organic form contrasting with the strict linearity of his chairs. Sets of dining chairs in rosewood and teak have become staples of the mid-century collecting market.

At auction, Kristiansen's furniture appears primarily through Danish houses including Palsgaard Kunstauktioner, Bidstrup Auktioner, Woxholt Auktioner, and Svendborg Auktionerne. The kidney-shaped rosewood desk leads prices at 27,561 SEK. Sets of six rosewood dining chairs trade at 21,000 to 22,000 SEK. With 168 items on Auctionist and 11 currently active, his market is among the more dynamic in Danish mid-century furniture.
