Jukka Rintala graduated from the Institute of Art and Design in Helsinki in 1976, and spent the years that followed moving through the infrastructure of Finnish textile and fashion manufacturing. He worked as a designer for Friitala, Marimekko, Nanso and Suomen Höyhen, learning the industrial side of the craft - pattern-making at scale, material sourcing, the relationship between a sketch and a finished garment produced in volume. Alongside the industrial commissions he also designed jewellery for Aarikka.

What distinguished Rintala from the outset was an interest in surface and ornament that pushed against the Scandinavian modernist preference for restraint. His prints were dense with colour; his silhouettes moved between the structural and the flowing. For the Presidential Independence Day reception held annually at Helsinki's Presidential Palace on 6 December, Rintala's evening gowns became some of the most watched pieces in Finnish public life - the reception is broadcast live and followed by a large national audience, and the gowns worn there carry a particular cultural weight.

Rintala also worked as a painter from the beginning of his career. His canvases from the 1980s have an art deco quality - bold patterns, theatricality, a decorative exuberance that connects to his approach in fashion. This parallel practice was not a sideline: the 2024 retrospective at the Craft Museum of Finland, titled "The Way of Dreams," showed costumes and paintings together across two floors, presenting the two strands as a single body of work. The exhibition also acknowledged the seamstresses who realized his more complex constructions.

In 2007 he designed a jewellery collection for goldsmith A. Tillander, and in 2008 he launched a ready-to-wear collection under his own name. Theatre costume work included the Svenska Teatern production of My Fair Lady in Helsinki (2003-2004). He received the Pro Finlandia medal in 2006, the Savonlinna medal in 2008, and both the Kultainen Vaatepuu prize and the Elle Style Award in 2012.

At auction, Rintala's pieces appear exclusively through Stockholms Auktionsverk's Helsinki operation, where all 20 recorded lots originate. His evening gowns and coats hold the highest results: the top recorded price is 15,489 SEK for an evening dress, with further lots reaching 9,074 SEK and 7,067 SEK respectively. The concentration of sales in Helsinki reflects his domestic following and the cultural significance of his work within Finland. No lots are currently active on Auctionist.
