Jørgen Sørensen was born on 16 May 1861 in Christiania, the city that would later become Oslo. A hip injury sustained at the age of seven left him dependent on a cane for the rest of his life, and the physical limitation shaped his path from the beginning: without the possibility of regular schooling, he spent his early years largely at a folk high school run by his older brother in Såner and later in Skjeberg. It was through this brother, Nikolai, and the extended family's farm in Askim, that he found the landscapes he would return to throughout his career.

His formal artistic education began in Christiania with drawing lessons under Andreas Disen in 1877, followed by study at Knud Bergslien's painting school. He worked under the sculptor Julius Middelthun at the Royal School of Art and Design before coming into contact with the Naturalist circle gathering around Christian Krohg in 1882-83. From 1883 to 1884 he studied under Frits Thaulow at the "Friluftsakademi" on Modum, an experience that deepened his attention to the conditions of outdoor light. He made his first trip to Paris in 1884, and returned again in the winter of 1889-90, studying with the Salon realists Leon Bonnat and Fernand Cormon.

Sørensen was a cousin of Edvard Munch, and the two painted together in Nordmarka in 1881. Their friendship was close, and Munch painted a portrait of Sørensen in 1885, a work now held by the National Museum in Oslo. While Munch moved toward psychological and expressionist territory, Sørensen stayed committed to the landscape, particularly the farmland and rural scenes of Eastern Norway - Askim, Rødenes, and the outskirts of Christiania. His paintings are precise in their observation of natural detail, careful about seasonal light, and often built around simple motifs: a farmyard, a mill, a summer field.

The Nasjonalmuseet holds eleven of his landscape paintings, including Sommerlandskap (Summer Landscape, 1887) and Kvernhuset (The Mill, c.1889). These works illustrate the qualities most consistently noted in contemporary accounts: controlled handling of light, patient attention to texture, and a commitment to documenting specific places. Despite a productive output across his short career, the body of work is acknowledged to be uneven - a consequence, perhaps, of working against persistent health difficulties and without the steady institutional support enjoyed by some contemporaries.

Sørensen died on 1 September 1894 in Askim, at the age of 33, from kidney disease. His final painting was left unfinished in Rødenes. On Auctionet, all 17 recorded items have passed through Grev Wedels Plass Auksjoner in Oslo. Top auction prices have reached 76,000 NOK for Fra et gardstun (1890) and 40,000 NOK for The Ullevål Estate (1887), indicating solid collector demand for his Eastern Norway farmland subjects in the Nordic market.
