Stig Johan 'Jonne' Erik Bergström was born on March 28, 1915, in Örnsköldsvik, a coastal town in Västernorrland in northern Sweden. He spent most of his life rooted in that region, and its landscapes, its light, and its people became the central subject matter of his painting. He died on January 29, 1987, in Kvissleby, Njurunda parish, not far from where he was born.

Bergström trained under Isaac Grünewald, the Swedish modernist who had himself studied with Henri Matisse in Paris and who brought a Fauvist intensity of colour back to Sweden in the early twentieth century. The influence was formative. Bergström also travelled to Paris to study directly, absorbing the colour-led tradition that Grünewald had mediated for his generation. The result was a painter committed to the expressive possibilities of colour rather than descriptive accuracy, working in a manner that Swedish critics and cataloguers have consistently described as colorist in character.

His subject matter divided between two poles. On one side sat figure studies, frequently featuring women in quiet interior settings, reading or at rest, rendered with a warm, unhurried attention to posture and light. On the other were the landscapes of Norrland: forests and mountain terrain, seasonal transitions from winter light to summer green, and occasional glimpses of local working life. A painting titled 'Skiftbyte Stockviksverken' ('Shift Change at Stockviken Works'), sold at Stadsauktion Sundsvall, shows his willingness to engage with the industrial fabric of his region as well as its natural scenery.

The Norrland auction houses have been the primary custodians of his market. Titles in the Auctionist database give a clear picture of his range: mountain subjects ('Fjällkung'), spring light ('Vårvinterljus'), summer settlements ('Sommarvistet'), and evening moods ('Mot kvällen' and 'Försvinnande aftonljus'), alongside reflections on water ('Spegling') and forest interiors ('Skoginteriör'). These are paintings attentive to transitional moments, the hour before dark, the last of the snow, the particular quality of northern summer warmth.

Bergström's work entered several regional museum collections, including Norrköpings konstmuseum, Linköpings museum, Sundsvalls museum, and Värmlands museum, confirming the recognition he received within the Swedish regional art scene during his lifetime. He is listed in Swedish art reference sources including Lexikonett Amanda and the Bukowskis Bukipedia database.

On the auction market, Bergström's work circulates primarily through northern Swedish houses. Of the 12 lots tracked on Auctionist, the majority have appeared at Norrlands Auktionsverk in Umeå and Stadsauktion Sundsvall, with individual appearances at Metropol and Göteborgs Auktionsverk. Hammer prices range from a few hundred Swedish kronor for smaller works up to 1,452 EUR for the mountain subject 'Fjällkung', his strongest result in the database. His oil 'Vårvinterljus' achieved 1,400 SEK. The market reflects a painter who is well regarded in the region where he worked but has not yet attracted widespread national or international collector attention.
