Jan Ekström works within the Scandinavian furniture tradition as a designer for Conform Collection AB, a manufacturer based in Holsbybrunn, Smaland, that has been producing armchairs in the same location since 1978. The collaboration places Ekström in a regional lineage of Swedish furniture making rooted in the forests and craft workshops of southern Smaland, the same landscape that gave rise to the Swedish furniture industry across the twentieth century.

His best-known design is the Gazell armchair, introduced around 2004. The chair reinterprets the Scandinavian rocking chair tradition through a bentwood oak frame that allows a gentle, controlled rocking motion without rockers in the conventional sense. The seat slopes back into a high backrest with an integrated headrest, and the entire seating surface is upholstered in natural sheepskin. The Gazell operates on what Ekström describes as the principle of "comfort follows form" - the structure itself determines the ergonomic support rather than padding compensating for a rigid frame. The design has proven durable in the market, with the Gazell remaining in active production well into the 2020s.

The Gyro is a second significant chair from the Ekström-Conform partnership. It departs from the organic warmth of the Gazell with a swivel mechanism on an aluminum five-star base, offering a more contemporary profile suited to both residential and contract interiors. The Moore armchair, a spinning design from 2023, extends this direction further with leather upholstery options.

Conform manufactures each piece in its own factory in Holsbybrunn, combining traditional woodworking methods with precision manufacturing. The commitment to a single production location reflects a strand of Swedish design thinking that links quality assurance directly to place and process rather than distributed supply chains.

On the auction market, Ekström's furniture circulates primarily through Swedish auction houses at the secondary design level. Of 27 recorded lots on our platform, pieces appear most frequently at Stockholms Auktionsverk's regional branches and Auctionet. The Gazell leads in secondary market value, with a paired set reaching 6,750 SEK, while the Moore armchair has sold at 6,000 SEK and paired Gyro chairs at 4,000 SEK. All 27 items are categorized predominantly as chairs and armchairs, reflecting the focused nature of Ekström's output for Conform.
