Hugo Carlberg was born on June 25, 1880 in Nassjo, in the Smaland province of Sweden. His father Karl Gustav Carlberg was a railway officer, and the family's roots in the Smaland highlands - a landscape of dark forests, frozen rivers, and working farms - would remain a constant visual source throughout his life. After schooling in Eksjo, he made his way to Stockholm, where he studied at the technical school before entering the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts between 1900 and 1905, training under August Malmstrom.

Following the Academy, Carlberg embarked on a study journey across Europe between 1905 and 1907, passing through Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and France. In Paris he studied at the Academie Colarossi and the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere, both favored by Scandinavian artists seeking an alternative to the more academic Ecole des Beaux-Arts. French plein air painting made a lasting impression, and the practice of painting outdoors in variable light conditions shaped how he would approach the Swedish countryside for the rest of his career.

Carlberg settled in Vrigstad in Smaland, a choice that anchored his work to the region's particular light and topography. He painted seasonal landscapes with an attention to transition - spring thaws, winter ice on rivers, frost-dusted farmyards - and developed a lyrical, restrained manner that kept sentiment in check. He was equally drawn to the Danish island of Bornholm, whose harbour scenes and coastal light offered contrast to his inland Smaland work. Portraits rounded out his practice, and he showed considerable range from rural subjects to individual studies.

His first public exhibition came at Sveriges allmaenna konstforening in Stockholm in 1906. The following year he participated in the Lund exhibition, and in 1908 he held his first solo exhibition in Malmo. He continued to exhibit regularly both in Sweden and internationally. In December 1926, a solo show in Lund introduced his watercolor work to audiences who had known him primarily as an oil painter. His work entered the collections of the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Moderna Museet, Malmo Museum, Lund University's Art Museum, Smalands Museum in Vaxjo, and institutions in Boras and London.

On the Nordic auction market, Hugo Carlberg's paintings appear mainly at houses in southern and central Sweden, including Crafoord Auktioner in Lund and Orebro Stadsauktioner. Auctionist has tracked 27 works, almost entirely oils on canvas or panel. The top recorded result stands at 22,000 SEK for "Betande hastar i landskap" - grazing horses in a Smaland setting - reflecting a steady collector interest in his regional landscape work. He died in Malmo in 1943.
