Erik Gustaf Holger Almqvist was born on June 30, 1907, in Gällersta, Närke - a rural parish in the central Swedish province that would remain a recurring source of motifs throughout his career. His first formal training came at Harald Eriksson's painting school in Örebro, where he developed his technical foundation before gaining admission to Konstakademin (the Royal Institute of Art) in Stockholm, where he studied from 1933 to 1936.

Study trips abroad shaped the character of his mature work. Almqvist traveled through France and Spain, and the Mediterranean light he encountered on Mallorca and in Paris left a visible mark on his palette and choice of subject matter. Harbour scenes from the Spanish coast - Ondarroa on the Basque coast appears in dated works from 1955 - and mixed-technique compositions from French ports sit alongside interiors, figure studies, and the more familiar Scandinavian landscapes of Närke and Skåne. The breadth of subject matter reflects a painter who moved comfortably between plein-air observation and studio-based work.

Almqvist received the Ester Lindahl travel scholarship in 1936, awarded to promising Swedish artists to support study travel. During his active years he held solo exhibitions in Stockholm and on several occasions in Örebro, and participated in group exhibitions including the Unga tecknare show at Nationalmuseum and the annual Vårssalongen at Liljevalchs konsthall. He also exhibited in Malmö and Karlskoga. His work entered the permanent collections of Örebro läns museum, Örebro County Council, and Moderna museet in Stockholm.

The works that circulate at Swedish auction houses - primarily through Örebro Stadsauktioner and Bukowskis - give a clear picture of his range: harbour motifs in mixed media, oil paintings of Scanian streets and fishing villages, flower still lifes, figure studies from the studio, and the watercolour 'Smedja' ('Smithy') suggest an eye drawn equally to working environments and landscape. Signed and dated canvases from the mid-1950s confirm his continued activity into that decade. Almqvist died in 1978.
