Hjort Knudsen A/S is a family-owned furniture company based in Tarm, a small town in West Jutland, Denmark. The business was started by Arne Hjort Knudsen and Ina Hjort Knudsen, who originally experimented with making pencil cases and school bags from their home in 1968 before formally registering the company on 1 December 1973. From those modest beginnings in rural Jutland, Hjort Knudsen grew into one of the larger privately held upholstered furniture manufacturers in Scandinavia.
The company's first major product category was armchairs with swivel bases and recliner backs, a format that remains central to its range today. During the 1980s and 1990s, production expanded steadily, and the company moved to larger premises to accommodate growing demand. The product range broadened from individual armchairs to include footstools, two- and three-seat sofas, and occasional chairs, all built around the same principles of quality upholstery and functional comfort features.
In 1997, ownership and management passed to the second generation: Klaus Hjort Knudsen, son of the founders, took over alongside his wife Ellen Mønsted, forming Hjort Knudsen A/S in its current legal structure. Under their direction the company has continued to expand both its product line and its international reach. Hjort Knudsen now sells across more than eleven European countries and exhibits at major international furniture fairs including the Salone del Mobile in Milan.
Manufacturing remains a central part of the company's identity. All furniture is produced at Hjort Knudsen's own factories in Europe, which collectively employ more than 2,000 people. The company manufactures many of its own components - including moulded foam cushions and both steel and wooden frames - in order to maintain consistent quality and security of supply. This degree of vertical integration is relatively uncommon among furniture brands of comparable scale. The company holds patents on several comfort-related mechanisms, including particular recliner back systems, swivel base configurations, adjustable neck supports, and built-in footrests.
The design language spans traditional and contemporary, with pieces available in both fabric and leather. Upholstery typically uses cold-cure foam combined with down, and leather offerings cover a broad palette including cognac, anthracite, light grey, and blue. The brand positions itself around comfort engineering rather than aesthetic novelty, with ergonomic function as the primary selling point - a pragmatic stance that fits well within the Danish furniture industry's broader tradition of user-centered design.
On the Nordic secondary market, Hjort Knudsen pieces appear regularly at Swedish auction houses, reflecting the brand's wide distribution in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. The 14 items recorded on the Auctionist platform are exclusively seating: armchairs with footstools, swivel chairs, and recliner armchairs. Top results include a pair of armchairs with footstools sold for 3,603 SEK and a swivel armchair reaching 3,600 SEK, with an armchair and footstool set achieving 2,900 EUR at a Swedish house. Pieces appear most frequently at regional Swedish houses including Laholms Auktionskammare, Auktionsverket Engelholm, and Stockholms Auktionsverk Helsingborg, consistent with the brand's strong presence in the southern Swedish furniture market.
