A career pivot from fashion to furniture turned out to be one of Danish design's more consequential detours. Born in 1967, Henrik Pedersen trained as a fashion designer and graduated in 1990, but he quickly found that his instincts ran toward three-dimensional form rather than fabric and cut. He retrained his eye toward furniture and lighting, eventually establishing the Aarhus-based studio 365° North, where he has operated ever since.
Pedersen's design language is built on a careful negotiation between opposites: organic curves held in tension with angular edges, soft materials paired with structural precision, warmth balanced against formal restraint. He has described his primary motivation as the close inspection of small details, an attention that traces back to his fashion training and carries through into the construction logic of each piece he develops.
The Imola armchair, designed for BoConcept in 2008, became the work that defined his reputation internationally. The brief was deceptively simple: a timeless lounge chair. Pedersen responded with something unusual, drawing inspiration from the geometry of a tennis ball, specifically the continuous S-curve that wraps its surface. The result was a chair whose profile reads as a single sweeping gesture, constructed from molded hard foam given shape, then layered with soft foam for comfort. The upholstery stitching echoes the ball's seam. The Imola has remained in continuous production and has appeared in film and television sets worldwide, becoming the kind of piece that anchors a room without announcing itself.
Beyond BoConcept, Pedersen has built a substantial body of work for Gloster, HOUE, Dedon, and other manufacturers across Europe and North America. His Gloster collections, including LOOP, GRID, RAW, RYDER, and CURVE, extend his vocabulary to outdoor furniture, where weather-resistant materials demand different structural solutions. For HOUE, his Click stacking chairs apply similar principles to casual outdoor seating at a more accessible price point. Other BoConcept designs, including the Adelaide dining chair, Amsterdam sofa, Salamanca sofa, Hampton sofa, and the Spän oak armchair, demonstrate his range across domestic typologies.
On the Auctionist platform, Pedersen's work appears primarily at Swedish auction houses including Bukowskis Stockholm, Stockholms Auktionsverk, and Höörs Auktionshall, with 13 items recorded in the database. The Imola chair is by far the most frequently traded piece, with two confirmed sales reaching 6,583 SEK and 5,119 SEK respectively. Gloster stacking chairs, Hampton sofas, and the Spän fåtölj have also appeared at Swedish auction. The secondary market activity reflects an audience that buys Pedersen's work new and holds it for years before it returns to sale, a pattern consistent with durable, quality-focused design rather than trend-driven pieces.
