Gustav Arne

Gustav Arne, born Gustaf Arne Husberg in Höganäs on May 4, 1925, grew up on the northwest coast of Skåne and spent most of his life in Viken, a fishing village that became the gravitational center of his painting. The landscapes and seascapes of Kullabygden, the beech forests in early spring, and the boats and harbor at Viken appear across his work with the intimacy of a place studied over decades.

His training was serious and varied. He studied at Skånska målarskolan in Malmö, then worked under the Danish painter Marie Wadskjær in Copenhagen before becoming a student of Isaac Grünewald in Stockholm, a connection that ended with Grünewald's death in 1946. Arne then spent time in Paris between 1948 and 1949, absorbing the light and color of French painting before returning to Skåne. He debuted at the Kullakonst exhibition in Höganäs in 1944 while still a student, and in 1949 participated in a group exhibition at Norrköpings konstmuseum alongside Bengt Orup, Kaj Siesjö, and Torsten Hult.

His paintings tend toward luminosity. The coastal light of Skåne, the particular silver-grey of the Sound, the way a beech forest looks in March before the leaves arrive, these are recurring preoccupations. He also painted in France and Spain, bringing a warmer palette back to his northern subjects. Circus scenes and figurative compositions appear alongside the landscapes, though Skåne always reasserted itself as his primary subject.

Arne was married from 1950 to the artist Bibban Berendahl, and the family's commitment to art carried to the next generation: his son Simon Arne and daughter Katinka Husberg are both working artists. A major retrospective was held at Vikingsberg in Helsingborg in 2006, drawing together work from across his long career. He died in Viken on August 14, 2011, at the age of 86.

His work is held in public collections at Moderna museet, Malmö konstmuseum, Norrköpings konstmuseum, Ystads konstmuseum, Helsingborgs stadsmuseum, and Höganäs Museum och Konsthall.
