Gunnar Bertil Johnsson - who frequently signed his canvases 'G Johansson' - was born on 12 June 1917 in Malmö and spent most of his working life between southern Sweden and Stockholm. Entirely self-taught as a painter, he developed a highly personal idiom through direct observation and a series of formative study trips rather than formal academy training.
His first international journey took him to France in 1949, and he followed that with two trips to Spain in 1951 and 1953. The Iberian peninsula proved transformative: Johnsson was captivated by the quality of southern light, and from that point his oil paintings began to turn decisively toward abstraction. Figures on dusty roads, coastal scenes, and interior glimpses dissolved into layered brushwork in which movement and atmosphere took precedence over descriptive detail. Critics who saw his debut at Galleri Gummesons in Stockholm in 1951 responded with considerable enthusiasm, predicting a significant career.
Over the following three decades Johnsson exhibited regularly in Sweden and abroad. He showed at Galerie Bleue in 1965, 1966, and 1976, at Galleri Karlsson and Maria Galleriet in Stockholm in 1968, and returned to Maria Galleriet in 1978. The Engström gallery hosted him in 1979 and Hands in Malmö in 1980. His work entered the collections of the Moderna museet and Liljevalchs konsthall in Stockholm, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, and the Skånes Konstförening in Malmö. The range of his titles - from figurative street scenes like 'Besvärsgatan' in Oskarshamn to serial abstractions titled 'Vintervision' - suggests a painter who moved between observed reality and a more internalized pictorial language throughout his career.
Johnsson continued to paint into old age. He died in Katarina parish in Stockholm on 28 April 2007, aged 89. At auction his oils on canvas appear regularly through Swedish houses, with prices reflecting a solid regional reputation rather than wide international recognition.
