Gunnar Cyrén was born in 1931 in Gävle, a city with deep roots in Swedish craft and industry. He trained in the metalwork department at Konstfack, the University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, where he developed the technical precision and material sensitivity that would define his later career. His dual command of glass and metal set him apart from his contemporaries and opened doors across multiple design disciplines.

In 1959 Cyrén joined Orrefors glassworks, one of the leading glass manufacturers in Sweden, and became head of design a decade later. His most celebrated contribution from this period was the Popglas series, launched in 1967. Departing sharply from the restrained classicism that dominated Swedish glass at the time, the Popglas pieces featured bold colours, playful forms and a joyful energy that resonated with the cultural spirit of the 1960s. The series remains a benchmark of Swedish postwar design.

From 1970 to 1976 Cyrén worked with the American company Dansk Designs International, producing more than 300 original designs across cast iron, enamelware and other materials. This period broadened his vocabulary and introduced his work to an international audience. He returned to Orrefors in 1977 and continued designing alongside running his own silversmithing studio in Gävle.

In 1991 Cyrén was commissioned to design the glassware for the Nobel Prize banquet marking the award's 90th anniversary. The resulting Nobel collection, mouth-blown in crystal and hand-painted with details in 21-carat gold, became one of the most visible design commissions in Sweden. The glasses are still used at the Nobel banquet each year and remain in production at Orrefors. The following year he designed the matching Nobel cutlery for Gense, completing a table service that links his glass and metalwork skills in a single, enduring commission.

Cyrén's work appears in museum collections across Europe and North America. His pieces at auction reflect sustained collector interest: the Popglas series attracts buyers drawn to 1960s Scandinavian modernism, while the Nobel collection and graal bowls command attention at the major Nordic auction houses. With 389 lots catalogued on Auctionist, his output spans a broad price range, making his work accessible to new collectors and specialists alike.
