Frederik VII

Frederik VII (1808–1863) was King of Denmark from 1848 until his death, the final monarch of the older Oldenburg royal line and the last to hold absolute power before Denmark's transformation into a constitutional state. His accession came at a turbulent moment: the German states were agitating for control of Schleswig-Holstein, and liberal movements across Europe were demanding representative government. Within a year of taking the throne, Frederik signed the June Constitution of 1849, a document that abolished absolute monarchy and established a bicameral parliament. The commemorative speciedaler struck that year - marked 'Accession' - captured both events in silver, and collectors have prized these pieces ever since.
The coins of his reign occupy a distinctive chapter in Danish monetary history. The rigsdaler system, which had evolved through the earlier rigsbankdaler, reached its mature silver form under Frederik VII with the VS (Viborg?) and FF (Frederiksberg) mintmarks distinguishing issues from different minting sessions between 1848 and 1863. The 2-rigsdaler pieces in particular represent some of the finest portrait coinage of the mid-19th century Danish mint, while the rare 1857 copper pattern (H 7, S 3a) stands as a numismatic curiosity of considerable importance.
Beyond the constitutional drama, Frederik VII was known as a keen antiquarian. The archaeologist P.V. Glob later credited him as the figure who, more than anyone else, helped arouse wide public interest in Danish antiquities during the mid-19th century. This enthusiasm for the national past was not incidental to his politics - linking Denmark's people to deep historical roots served a unifying purpose at a time when national identity was under pressure.
He died in 1863 without legitimate heirs, ending his branch of the Oldenburg line. The throne passed to Christian IX, beginning a new dynastic chapter. The coins from Frederik VII's reign - particularly the 'Accession' speciedaler of 1848 and the silver rigsdaler series - remain active on the Nordic numismatic market. On Auctionist, 20 lots bearing his name have been catalogued through Bruun Rasmussen, Copenhagen's leading coin auction house, with realized prices for the silver rigsdaler lots running between 1,050 and 1,700 DKK.
