Erik Gunnar Osslund was born on November 25, 1913 in Gothenburg, into one of Swedish art's most prominent families. His father, Helmer Osslund (1866-1938), was among the most celebrated painters of northern Swedish landscapes, and growing up in that atmosphere shaped Erik's artistic direction from an early age. He began his formal studies at Tekniska skolan in Stockholm between 1931 and 1933, then turned to his father as his principal teacher, studying under him from 1930 to 1938. Together, father and son made study trips to Germany and Paris, giving Erik direct exposure to European painterly traditions at a formative time.

After Helmer's death in 1938, Erik continued developing his own practice while also taking on the role of authenticating his father's works - a responsibility that placed him at the center of the Osslund legacy. He held his first independent solo exhibition at Modern konst i hemmiljö in Stockholm in 1941, and went on to exhibit separately at numerous venues across Sweden throughout the following decades. He later traveled beyond Europe, making independent visits to Central America and Mexico, experiences that broadened his palette and subject matter beyond the Nordic terrain.

Osslund's art is rooted in the landscapes of northern Sweden - Lappland, the mountain districts and the Swedish archipelago. He worked across a range of media, producing oils, gouache, pastel and watercolor. His approach to landscape carries traces of his father's influence but moves in its own direction, with a quieter, more intimate handling of light and space. Works such as "Fjällandskap med fors" (Mountain landscape with rapids) and "Lapplänsk pastoral" (Lappland pastoral) show his attachment to the open, elemental terrain of the far north.

His work entered significant museum collections during his lifetime. He is represented at Örebro läns museum, Norrbottens museum, Västerås konstförenings galleri, and Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde in Stockholm - the latter being one of Sweden's most historically significant art institutions. This institutional presence reflects the standing his work held in Swedish cultural life, even if he remained a less publicly prominent figure than his father.

On the auction market, Erik Osslund's works appear primarily at Swedish regional houses. The Auctionist database records 15 items, selling predominantly at Stockholms Auktionsverk, Gomér & Andersson Nyköping, Auktionshuset Kolonn and Auctionet. His highest recorded sale in the database is 5,500 SEK for an oil on canvas depicting a mountain landscape with rapids, with other oils on canvas and panel selling in the range of 2,000 to 4,600 SEK. The works are consistently oil paintings, reflecting his primary medium, and the motifs align closely with his lifelong focus on northern Swedish terrain. He died in 1982.
