Dan Nygård was born in 1943 in Dalarna, the inland province in central Sweden whose landscape and folk art tradition has shaped many Swedish artists before and after him. His formal training took place at Börje Huvudskou's painting school, where he developed a technically open approach that would define his practice across several decades.
Nygård worked primarily in mixed media, collage, and oil painting, combining materials in ways that gave his surfaces a tactile, layered quality. Old photographs, letters, and found papers were incorporated alongside paint on grounds including paper, mulberry paper, panel, canvas, metal, and wood. Titles in the auction record - "Objekt", "Fragment", "Terra", "Fiol", "Fram i ljuset" - point toward an abstract vocabulary that was nonetheless grounded in perceptible references: musical instruments, elemental materials, light. His compositions show what observers described as a consistent firmness of structure alongside restrained selectivity in how much was included on the surface.
His exhibition history spans several decades and a range of venues across Sweden. He showed at Galleri Rocade and Galerie Origo in Stockholm, Galleri Nord in Örebro, Utställningssalongen in Stockholm, Bild och Form in Karlskrona, Majoren in Sollefteå, Art Diana in Helsinki, Galleri 101 in Malmö, and Landskrona Konsthall. He participated in ART Nordic in Gothenburg in 2008 and exhibited with Galleri Sjöhästen in Sollefteå that same year. Later in his career his work was represented by Galleri Scandinavia and Galleri Sjöhästen, and prints and mixed media works by him were stocked at Emmaboda Konst.
Nygård's geographic footprint at auction is anchored in northern and central Sweden, reflecting both the Dalarna roots and an audience that formed around the Norrland exhibitions. Norrlands Auktionsverk accounts for ten of the fifteen auction appearances recorded on Auctionist, with Göteborgs Auktionsverk, Metropol, Gomér and Andersson Norrköping, and RA Auktionsverket Norrköping contributing the rest. The work sells modestly, with mixed media compositions on paper reaching up to 505 SEK at auction, reflecting a regional following rather than a broad national market.
Dan Nygård died in 2023. His work stands as a record of sustained engagement with abstract and expressive visual language over a long career, carried out largely outside the major metropolitan gallery circuits but with genuine consistency of purpose.
