Dan Lindstrand was born in Gothenburg in 1904 and spent his entire life in the city, developing a body of work closely tied to the Swedish west coast and its light. He belonged to the generation of Gothenburg painters working in the shadow of the more internationally recognised colourists of the interwar period, though he carved out a distinct niche as a painter of the sea and of flowers.

Lindstrand worked almost exclusively in oil on canvas. His seascapes and coastal scenes - often depicting the rocky shores around Vinga lighthouse at the entrance to Gothenburg harbour - show a feel for the moody, grey-green light of the North Sea. Waves, storm skies, and the silhouettes of ships appear frequently in his output, placing him in the tradition of Swedish marine painting that stretches from Johan Christian Dahl's followers through to the Gothenburg colourists.

Alongside his maritime work, Lindstrand painted flower still lifes with considerable confidence: arrangements of lilacs, red and yellow roses, and other garden blooms set against dark or neutral backgrounds. These works carry a quiet domesticity and are among the most approachable in his output.

He was the brother of Viktor "Vicke" Lindstrand, the glass designer who became an internationally known figure through his decades of work at Orrefors and Kosta Boda. The two brothers represent different branches of Swedish visual culture - Dan the easel painter working within a regional tradition, Vicke the modernist designer who brought Swedish glass to world audiences.

Dan Lindstrand died in Gothenburg in 1983. He did not achieve the public profile of his brother, but his paintings have remained in steady circulation in Swedish regional auctions since his death.

At auction, Lindstrand's work appears primarily through smaller Swedish regional houses. On Auctionist, his 15 recorded lots are exclusively paintings, with buyers found at Ekenbergs, Gomér and Andersson in Linköping, and Göteborgs Auktionsverk. Prices are modest, typically in the range of 200-600 SEK, reflecting his position as a capable regional painter with a small but consistent collector base.
