C Göran Karlsson was born in Uppsala in 1944 and trained at the Royal University College of Fine Arts in Stockholm between 1967 and 1972. Uppsala, with its academic intensity and proximity to Stockholm's postwar art scene, provided an early foundation, but it was his years at Konstakademien that shaped the formal vocabulary he would spend decades refining.

His early work was resolutely figurative, grounded in careful observation of landscapes and the Swedish environment. The turn came in the 1970s, when Karlsson began investigating pure geometric form. Railway yards and industrial geometries supplied the initial motifs - intersecting lines, signal structures, repeating rectangular grids - but the work was never documentary. These elements became a symbolic language, a system of shapes standing in for concepts of meeting, transition, and stillness.

By the 1980s and 1990s, the vocabulary had grown more stripped and meditative. Works such as "Möte I" (Meeting I) and "En ängel i rummet" (An Angel in the Room) use simple geometric configurations to suggest presence and encounter without resorting to narrative. The CGK monogram became the consistent signature across oils, gouaches, tempera panels, and colour serigraphs. His command of printmaking - particularly silkscreen in flat, layered colour - gave the geometric work a graphic precision that distinguished it from more painterly Swedish abstraction of the period.

His career has received sustained institutional recognition. Works are held in the collections of Nationalmuseum and Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Museum of Art in Uppsala, and regional institutions in Eskilstuna, Umeå, Gävle, Borås, Gothenburg, Västerås, and Norrköping. In autumn 2021 he was named Artist of the Quarter by Enjoy Scandinavian Art, with a solo exhibition titled "An Angel in the Room" held at Sigtuna Kulturgård.

On the auction market, Karlsson appears regularly at Stockholms Auktionsverk and Bukowskis, with gouaches on panel leading by sale price. The top recorded sale in our database is a gouache titled "Möte" at 9,000 SEK, with additional "Möte" variants and pieces such as "En ängel i rummet" and "KAOS" (1990) also changing hands in recent years. The 37 lots in the Auctionist database span major Stockholm houses as well as Skånes Auktionsverk, reflecting a buyer base distributed across Sweden.
