Bottega Veneta

Founded in 1966 in Vicenza, a city in the Veneto region long associated with skilled craftsmanship, Bottega Veneta was established by Michele Taddei and Renzo Zengiaro. The name translates as "Venetian boutique," and from the outset the house positioned itself around the quality of its materials and the skill of its artisans rather than the visibility of a logo. Vicenza's tradition of fine leatherworking gave the brand its essential character: slow, deliberate, and rooted in technique.

The house's defining innovation, the Intrecciato weave, emerged from a practical problem. Early sewing machines at the atelier were not powerful enough to stitch through thick hides, so craftsmen developed a method of weaving narrow strips of leather through slits cut in a second layer, creating a flexible, self-reinforcing textile with a distinctive basket pattern. The technique became inseparable from the brand's identity and remains handcrafted in Vicenza to this day.

By 1972 Bottega Veneta had opened a New York boutique, and its reputation attracted a clientele that prized discretion over display. A 1978 advertising campaign, created in collaboration with Andy Warhol, articulated the brand's ethos with the line "When your own initials are enough", a direct statement that the house's work required no further branding.

In 2001 the French luxury group Kering (then PPR) acquired Bottega Veneta and installed Tomas Maier as creative director. Maier, who held the role for seventeen years, deepened the house's commitment to quiet luxury, expanding its ready-to-wear and fine jewellery lines while keeping the Intrecciato at the centre of every collection. Under his tenure the brand's revenues tripled and it became Kering's second-largest source of income.

Daniel Lee succeeded Maier in 2018 and reoriented the house toward a younger audience, introducing new silhouettes and a more saturated colour palette. His Pouch bag, launched in 2019, achieved immediate cultural traction. Lee departed in 2021 and was succeeded by Matthieu Blazy, who had previously worked under Raf Simons and at Céline, and whose collections have continued to test the tension between craft tradition and contemporary dress.

At Nordic auction houses, Bottega Veneta pieces appear regularly, with 73 items recorded across the platform. The strongest results have come from Kaplans Auktioner (21 lots) and Bukowskis Stockholm (11 lots). Top prices have reached 21,000 SEK for an early 1980s Lauren bag, 12,500 SEK for a medium Hobo Bag in Intrecciato leather, and 10,965 EUR for a Knot Clutch. The majority of lots fall under miscellaneous accessories, with a smaller share in collectibles and silver objects.
