Erik Bengt Torgny Delefors was born on 17 March 1917 in Gesäters parish in Västra Götaland and grew up during a period when Swedish modernism was slowly opening to Continental European influences. His formation as an artist was unusually long and deliberate, beginning with studies at Konstgillets målarskola in Borås from 1943 to 1947, followed by a year at Valands konstskola in Gothenburg in 1948. Those foundational years in western Sweden gave him a solid grounding in drawing and composition before he turned to Paris for the more experimental thinking that would shape his mature practice.
In Paris between 1949 and 1953, Delefors worked under the French Cubist theorist André Lhote at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, where he also studied independently in 1950. Lhote was among the most sought-after painting teachers of the postwar years, attracting students from across Scandinavia and beyond; his insistence on structural discipline beneath surface color left a lasting imprint on Delefors. This was reinforced by the French State Cultural Scholarship Delefors received in 1952, which allowed him to pursue his Parisian formation without financial constraint. He also later explored applied arts, studying enamel painting technique at Gustavsbergs fabriker in 1967.
Back in Sweden, Delefors built a practice around expressive figure painting, intense still lifes, and domestic interiors. His palette tends toward the saturated, and his figures often have a compact, almost sculptural weight that recalls the Lhote influence filtered through a distinctly Nordic sensitivity. He was not a strict Cubist, but structural organization remained visible beneath the painterly surfaces - forms are broken into planes rather than dissolved. He held his first solo exhibition in 1951 at Lilla Galleriet in Stockholm, and went on to exhibit at venues including Borås konstgalleri, Lorensbergs konstsalong in Gothenburg, and group shows at Liljevalchs konsthall. He also worked in drawing and sculpture alongside painting.
The breadth of his institutional recognition speaks to a sustained critical engagement with his work. His paintings entered the collections of the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Göteborgs konstmuseum, Borås konstmuseum, and Statens konstråd, as well as numerous municipalities and county councils across Sweden. He received the City of Gothenburg Cultural Scholarship in 1975, and State Work Scholarships in both 1976 and 1980. He died on 25 April 1996.
On the Nordic auction market, Delefors appears most frequently at Borås Auktionshall - reflecting both his geographic roots and the loyalty of regional collectors. The database on Auctionist holds 13 recorded works, almost all oils on canvas or board, with subjects ranging from figure paintings and portraits to landscapes and flower still lifes. Realized prices have generally fallen in the range of 300 to 2,800 SEK, with the highest recorded sale reaching 2,812 SEK for an oil on canvas. Works also appear at Göteborgs Auktionsverk, Helsingborgs Auktionskammare, and Garpenhus Auktioner. The price level reflects a collector base that is primarily regional, though his museum presence suggests his work holds historical significance beyond the secondary market.
