Alf Gustaf Natanael Lindberg was born in Gothenburg on 26 February 1905 and spent his entire working life in the same city. His formal training began at Slöjdföreningens skola between 1924 and 1927, followed by four years at Valand målarskola from 1927 to 1931, where he studied under Tor Bjurström and Sigrid Ullman. These were the years when the Gothenburg Colourists were forming their collective identity, and Lindberg moved in that orbit. He would, however, maintain a complicated and ultimately distancing relationship with the group for the rest of his life, insisting that his aims were different.

The early influence of Paul Cézanne and Karl Isaksson shaped his approach to constructing a picture from colour relationships rather than from observed detail. In his first decade as a painter he worked primarily from the west coast landscape, producing coastlines, still lifes, and figure studies in a relatively contained, dark palette. The subjects were conventional; the structural ambition behind them was not. Colour and form consistently took precedence over narrative or descriptive content.

Over the following decades his brushwork grew more energetic and the colour more uncompromising. He moved from coastal motifs toward increasingly complex compositions that drew on mythology and biblical imagery. Works like "Komposition med figurer" and "Oro" show the direction his painting took: dense, worked surfaces that carry the evidence of reworking, erasure, and overpainting. He described his process as an emergence from chaos, a quality visible in the physical texture of the canvases.

In 1959 he was elected a member of Kungliga Akademien för de fria konsterna (the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts). In 1973 the King of Sweden awarded him the Prince Eugen Medal for outstanding artistic achievement. A major retrospective was held at Göteborgs Konstmuseum in 1989, and in 2005 - fifteen years after his death - Waldemarsudde in Stockholm mounted an exhibition of around a hundred works, confirming his place in the longer history of Swedish modernism. His paintings are held at Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Göteborgs Konstmuseum, Kalmar Konstmuseum, Norrköpings Konstmuseum, and Nasjonalgalleriet in Oslo.

At auction, Lindberg's work appears steadily at Swedish houses. The platform currently holds 14 items, all from previous sales. His highest recorded price in this database is 16,000 SEK for "Komposition med figurer", followed by 11,800 SEK for a coastal motif from Tjörn and 7,000 SEK for a window view. His work has also sold internationally, including a landscape composition at 2,500 EUR. Bukowskis Stockholm, Stockholms Auktionsverk Helsingborg, and Göteborgs Auktionsverk account for the bulk of his recorded sales.
