Alain Soucasse was born in 1951 in Saint-Girons, in the Ariège department of the French Pyrenees. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Aix-en-Provence before moving to Paris to specialise in stained glass, working at the renowned Gruber and Le Chevallier studios from 1971 to 1974. This training in light, colour and material texture left a permanent mark on how he approaches the picture plane.
In 1974 Soucasse moved to Stockholm, where he remained until 1981. During this formative period he taught painting and stained glass technique at Konstfack and at Medborgarskolan, and developed the painterly practice that would define his mature work. Sweden gave him both an audience and a critical framework: his work was noticed by Olle Granath, then director of Moderna Museet, a recognition that helped establish his reputation in the Nordic market.
His printmaking draws on a range of intaglio techniques - etching, carborundum, and mixed-media combinations - that allow him to build works with pronounced texture and dense colour. The carborundum technique, which uses abrasive powder applied to a plate to create rough, paint-like surfaces in print, suits his interest in material presence. Works recorded in Swedish auctions are described as "komposition, blandteknik" and "komposition, färgetsning med carborundum", reflecting this technical range.
After returning to France, Soucasse settled in Meyrargues in Provence. He represented French printmaking at the Grafik Biennale in Sapporo, Japan in 1991, and in 1995 participated in the "Art Catalan contemporain" exhibition in Montpellier alongside Tapies, Miro and Clave. In 2008 he exhibited at the Palais des Arts in Marseille with Arman and Cesar. His work is held by galleries across France, and he has maintained ongoing relationships with galleries in Scandinavia.
On the Nordic auction market, Soucasse has 29 recorded lots in our database, sold exclusively at Swedish auction houses. Top results include a mixed-media composition at 1,200 SEK and a carborundum colour etching at 650 SEK. Works have appeared at Helsingborgs Auktionskammare, Garpenhus Auktioner, Göteborgs Auktionsverk, Auctionet, and TOKA Auktionshus - a distribution reflecting the Swedish collector base he built during his Stockholm years and the ongoing visibility of his prints in the Nordic secondary market.
