Åke Albert Winnberg was born on 1 March 1913 in Umeå, in northern Sweden. In his youth he moved to Gothenburg, where he trained as a commercial artist at Slöjdföreningens skola - the influential school of arts and crafts that shaped many Gothenburg artists of his generation. Rather than continuing into the formal fine art program at Valand, as several of his fellow students did, Winnberg chose to develop his practice independently. He maintained close ties to that network throughout his career, absorbing influences through ongoing contact with colleagues who had taken the more academic route.
His subject matter was drawn from the world around him in and near Gothenburg: landscape motifs from the west coast and the countryside, harbor scenes including views along Göta älv, farmyard interiors, urban street scenes, and still lifes. He worked in oil on canvas and board, in watercolor, and as a draughtsman. The paintings are characterized by loose, vigorous brushwork, a chalky palette leaning toward cooler tones, and a directness that keeps the work grounded in observed experience without tipping into strict realism. After the Second World War he made several study trips to England and France, which deepened his engagement with contemporary European painting.
Winnberg showed his work widely in Sweden. He held solo exhibitions at venues including God Konst in Gothenburg and Liljevalchs konsthall in Stockholm. He participated in group exhibitions representing Gothenburg art in cities abroad including Turku and Dublin. His work entered the collections of Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Borås Art Museum, and Gothenburg Art Museum - a spread that reflects both his local importance in the Gothenburg scene and his recognition at the national level.
At Swedish auction, Winnberg's work appears most frequently at Borås Auktionshall and Göteborgs Auktionsverk, which together account for the majority of his 15 lots in the Auctionist database. All 15 items are paintings. Sold prices in recent results have ranged from 300 SEK to 700 SEK, with oils of harbor scenes, portraits, and landscapes all represented. The modest price levels reflect the regional nature of his market, where his work continues to trade steadily among collectors with an interest in mid-century west Swedish painting. Åke Winnberg died on 14 April 1974 in Högsbo parish, Gothenburg, at the age of 61.
