Karl & Faber was founded in Munich in 1923 by art historian Georg Karl and Germanist Curt von Faber du Faur, initially as an antiquarian dealing in rare books and auctions. Georg Karl's son Louis joined in 1961 and gradually shifted the house's focus from books toward fine art, eventually building one of Germany's largest auction operations. Since 2010 Karl & Faber has been among the leading houses in the D-A-CH region, conducting eight live auctions per year from its Munich headquarters at Amiraplatz 3, near the Odeonsplatz.
The house specializes in Old Masters, 19th-century painting, and modern and contemporary art, and has earned a particular reputation for scholarly catalogue standards and rigorous provenance research. A dedicated in-house team of art historians and lawyers handles ownership tracing and restitution matters. Branches in Hamburg and Dusseldorf, with representatives in Basel, London, and the United States, give the century-old Munich institution genuine international reach.
